It certainly helps if you know what you are doing, research is key and courage and curiosity helps.

The Leonardo exhibition had lovely display cases full of example of his materials.





I didnt spot an oil paint making case.
There were no oil paintings in the exhibition so that may have been the reason.
Vasari is my go to source when looking in to that period. If not Ralph Mayer will no doubt have some thing to say. Generally it like most potions.
Magic or nutrient.
Culpepper to Elizabeth Davis mix it up and slap it/in on correctly according to each of the constituents properties and the weather. (If it is wet out side it will take longer to dry, moisture in the air).
Fat to lean.
If you want cracks reverse, speed up the process, that usually means heat, and make sure you seal it with a sympathetic top coat…or it will fall to pieces.
Oil and water do not mix they emulsify.
