Bridget Riely- https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/hayward-gallery-art/bridget-riley#overview
Aslam Kiefer-https://whitecube.com/exhibitions/exhibition/anselm_kiefer_bermondsey_2019
It was interesting. Both shows different but both mood changing and in the case of the Bridget Riley my daughter had a migraine. The Kiefer was more her speed colour wise and she loved the mysticism.
One Riley caught my eye and I thought Motherwell.

I really liked this piece.
I may have become over-familiar with her colourful pieces I am beginning to find them difficult to observe for too long. I find them aggressive.
I enjoyed her drawing and could feel her presence.

Kiefer on why size matters-
”Why size matters” helped me to understand Bradfords scale. I like the idea that you can’t escape and fall in you are enveloped but this does possibly limited or invite public or institution art. I have looked at this before and on a domestic legal that would mean schools and supermarkets for me.
I think this may of been one of the reasons I liked working with paint finishes, abstract meant no pressure it could just be all-enveloping and I got to tweak it how I wanted. Kiefer’s hall reminds me of the hallways I made for my clients in the 80s. Moody and fascinating places to move though.
The string theory that kiefer refers to is unproven and therefore a great subject to speculate about.
I like the inclusion of the ruins but I am not happy with the figurative style. I find the subject dark and depressing so when it becomes figurative I can’t make up my own story and don’t enjoy it.
Myth and ledge has been a bit flogged to death with all the tv dealing with flatlands and goblins recently. Loli, my daughter spotted a few Harry Potter symbols which rather cubbyhole it for her….saying that Mark Bradford mentioned Voldemort Black……note- caution.
I am looking at connecting the method and the philosophy -both these show confirm that Abstraction is something I am drawn to along with myth and legend rather than history. Myth and legends deal with learning and hope and virtue they nurture rather than inform.

On hope – I want to follow up this piece by Andy Holden he is using bowls https://andyholdenartist.com/
