learn.gold.ac.uk/pluginfile.php/1708423/mod_resource/content/2/MAAL practice task 2 2122.pdf

I would like you to create something from the materials listed below that responds to an aspect of your practice/pedagogy.

Can you identify a key word that you often return to when describing what you do or what you are preoccupied by…..be it; joining, entanglements, belonging, performances, miscommunications, representations, pairings, sounds, surfaces, details, language, stitching, nostalgia, care.. …… Your chosen word will underpin your making within this task.

Reassemble. (make mine)

Document.

You should choose at least 5 of the materials below to work with. The list and materials are open to your interpretation.

The materials are:

• 3 pens or pencils of any type

• Paper of some sort that you have available this could be regular A4 paper, packaging, wrapping, photographic, wallpaper, envelopes…………

• Something organic

• Some fabric cut into 10 cm squares- as many or as few as you like – same or different fabric

• Some sort of print

• Something that you can manipulate

• Thread, string, wool, ……….

• A remnant or leftover

• Something adhesive

• Part of something else

• An image

Questions you may ask yourself and consider during the task are listed below.

These might link to the tasks from last week’s session and material decisions you made then.

What materials in the list was I initially drawn to and why? Attractive

Did I want to make something in a way I always do? discovery

Am I repeating processes that I know? One I’ve developed

What materials feel unimportant and why am I rejecting them? How do I start to make, when is that moment? Layer

Do I have an end in sight or am I being intuitive? both

Am I conscious of making something appealing aesthetically? Depends on the question above

What scale am I thinking about? It will find its own.

Am I imagining how this may be perceived? Eventually

How do I gather these materials, are they ordered or random? With intent

Am I aware of the time I am using? Sometimes

When do I know something is right – what is my criteria for that? When a surface is created then I review, (make, record, reflect, research, remake.)

How am I relating my thinking to the way I am playing with the materials? When do I know to stop? Triangulating and time.

Is it possible to go too far? Yes but i have documented, to allow regression and deconstruction although in another medium.

If it isn’t exciting me what do I do? Turn it upside down and inside out explore though another lens.

What is the balance between my intentions and the outcomes? None

Do I have an idea? Lots.

Am I remembering my chosen word or does this diminish the more I make? It is always there.
